Clinical Pilates
Not just another reformer Pilates class.
Ebb and Flow Exercise Physiology offers a personalised and intimate space to start your clinical Pilates journey. I help women overcome their pelvic floor dysfunction, persistent pain and improve their posture, core strength and mobility using traditional clinical Pilates equipment including the Pilates reformer, wall tower and Wunda chair as well as mat Pilates exercises.
Improve pelvic health, relieve chronic pain, and enhance pelvic health, posture, and mobility
What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates has been around for decades and is a form of rehabilitation and exercise therapy that is low impact, supported and appropriate for any age and fitness level.
I’m sure by now you’ve heard of, and probably even tried reformer Pilates classes using large numbers of Pilates reformers in a group class setting.
And while this hugely popular group class is likely fun and challenging it is not to be confused with clinical Pilates.
Instead, clinical Pilates is highly individualised and focuses on programming involving precise, targeted and controlled movements to suit your body.
This is why clinical Pilates is so effective for people with:
pelvic floor dysfunction
persistent pain
hypermobility or stiffness
pregnancy or postpartum
My Specialised Services
How Clinical Pilates can help you
-
Pilates for Pelvic Health
I combine my pelvic health training with my knowledge of all things women’s health and Pilates to provide clinical Pilates sessions that optimise your pelvic floor function and give you an understanding of why you’re experiencing symptoms such as urine leakage and prolapse.
Pelvic floor dysfunction is not something you have to live with and sometimes it takes a full body approach using specific exercises to achieve pelvic health outcomes.
This is where an individualised Pilates program from an Allied Health Professional like me can be highly beneficial.
-
Pilates for Persistent Pain
Chronic pain can leave us feeling vulnerable and nervous to move our bodies in case it makes things worse.
I take the time to listen to your story and understand your signs and symptoms by providing clinical Pilates sessions in a safe and supported way that not only strengthens the full body including the core and stabilising muscles, but reminds the brain that movement can be safe and effective in pain management.
Many chronic pain conditions can benefit from clinical Pilates, from chronic injury to hypermobility, fibromyalgia or arthroses.
-
Pregnancy & Postpartum
As a pregnancy and postpartum corrective exercise specialist I help you manage pain or pelvic floor dysfunction, prepare for birth and recover postpartum.
During pregnancy our bodies change to accommodate your baby and prepare for birth. This can leave you feeling unbalanced, unstable in our joints or pelvic floor and even cause pain such as SIJ, pubic symphysis or low back pain.
While research shows that many forms of exercise are safe and healthy for mum and Bub, if you need exercise that is low impact and individualised then clinical Pilates is excellent for this stage of life.
-
Posture & Biomechanics
Our posture and ability to move through different positions can play a huge part in pelvic floor dysfunction, pain and stiffness.
Every client I see begins with a comprehensive initial assessment including a posture and movement assessment to inform exercise selection for both clinical Pilates sessions and home exercise programs.
Your Pilates program is not just a pre-made template for your condition or goals, it is an individualised program that addresses your signs and symptoms from a whole body perspective.
How I use clinical Pilates at Ebb & Flow
I create highly personalised Pilates plans
At Ebb & Flow Exercise Physiology, every client begins with an initial assessment including your current health status, your posture, a movement assessment (nothing strenuous) and your goals.
This allows me to tailor your exercises to your individual circumstances including any pelvic floor dysfunction, chronic pain, or pregnancy-related discomfort.
I aim to identify the cause of your symptoms and not just provide a bandaid solution to them.
I’ll be honest, this can take time to get to the bottom of. Our bodies are complex and often have many layers of compensations due to all our life experiences.
The good news is that our bodies are also wonderful and I lean into that complexity to find ways to get you moving that feel good and address the root cause of your concerns.
I use Pilates equipment in a way that suits every body
This is where clinical Pilates really shines. The equipment is incredibly versatile and when used well, it provides controlled, adjustable resistance to aid in both rehabilitation and strengthening.
It can also provide a novel way to move for your body and brain that helps unravel those compensations by activating the muscles and connective tissue that might have gotten a bit lazy and calming down those that are doing too much.
This is super effective when managing
Poor posture
Areas of stiffness
Persistent pain
Aches, pains and niggles
Pelvic floor dysfunction
